Cello trouble HELP!!!!!!!!!?

I have played cello for 4 years, and my brother is starting. He recently looked at his cello, and told me the strings were comin' off. I looked, and the strings are 2 inches off from the finger board! They are still in their places on the bridge. Is the finger board the problem, or the strings??? Thanks
