Should I buy a full golf club set or just a few starter clubs?

I'm fairly new to the game of golf and i'm looking to invest in some good clubs. I would like to know if it's a better investment to buy a full complete set or should I buy a driver and an iron set to get me started. I have a decent handicap for a beginner and I want some clubs that will work as I get better as a golfer.
