When did it stop being a crime in Britain to use the Gaelic languages?

I know the British prohibited the use of Gaelic for centuries because they wanted everyone to speak English. But at some point it went from being illegal to being something that just wasn't done. (Now of course the Gaelic languages have been revived and are in use.) When did it become a less serious offense?
